In response to the question by Travis B. about Gandalf's lineage, here is my response. According to "The Complete Guide To Middle Earth" by Robert Foster, Gandalf was one of the Istari and arrived in Middle Earth about TA 1000. Mr. Foster believes he may have been a Maia in human guise. As for the ring he bore, Narya, it was given to him by the elf Cirdan. Hope this helps!
