You have to remember that The Lost Tales is not the same as the final edition, so therefore many principles are changed. Eriol in many ways represents England, before it was founded, in its beginnings, and so on. Also you will remember that the silmarillion says, and some mariners found the straight path and glimpsed the light of it, or something to that effect. You will remember what I am talking about I think. But maybe he is one of those lucky people who saw the lonely isles, and actually lived to go there. I believe that Christopher's footnotes at the end of ever section explain this much better.
