Medieval or Before?

As with everybody else here, I am a Lord of the Rings fan and am going to see the movie tomorrow at famous players. Still, with all this Shire-reckoning going around, I still don't know when the book and movie took place. The best chance is medieval, but I don't see any actual knights in it. Is it just me, or was the Lord of the Rings set in pre-medieval ages? I am still pondering over this, but for now I am saying medieval.
