- LOTR Movie Site July 8, 1999 Elijah Wood Confirmed as Frodo The news broke early this morning: Elijah Wood has been officially cast as Frodo in Lord of the Rings. The Insider has been able to confirm this with New Line, as well as confirm that Sean Connery has officially passed as Gandalf and Anthony Hopkins may be up for the plum wizard role. As the Hollywood Reporter states, this project marks a major commitment from Wood, since principal photography will last more than a year on each film.
