Lord of the Rings Casts Its Spell on the Web

Do the the names Gandalf, Bilbo, and Frodo mean anything to you? Even if they don't ring a bell, the story they take part in will. Gandalf, Bilbo, and Frodo are characters who inhabit the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. The first-ever live action adaptation of the trilogy is finally coming to the big screen. Well eventually. The first installment in the trilogy is expected to hit your local multiplex in 2001. Breaking with Hollywood tradition, the filmmakers are attempting to pull off an unprecedented fete-- they are trying to shoot all three of the films at once and then release them one year at a time. While filming has only just begun, the Web is already teeming with fan sites, speculations, and good old shrines to this favorite fantasy tale.

Lord of the Rings, which in many peoples' eyes set the bar for fantasy fiction written this century, was recently honored by Amazon.com customers, who voted it the best book of the millennium.

Although filming is taking place deep in the heart of New Zealand, thanks to the Net, buzz is already reaching a fever pitch. Eager followers of Lord of the Rings are giving Star Wars fans a run for their money when it comes to closely monitoring their favorite flick.
