Do the the names Gandalf, Bilbo, and Frodo mean anything to
you? Even if they don't ring a bell, the story they take part in will. Gandalf, Bilbo, and
Frodo are characters who inhabit the beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R.
Tolkien. The first-ever live action adaptation of the trilogy is finally coming to the big
screen. Well eventually. The first installment in the trilogy is expected to hit your
local multiplex in 2001. Breaking with Hollywood tradition, the filmmakers are attempting
to pull off an unprecedented fete-- they are trying to shoot all three of the films at
once and then release them one year at a time. While filming has only just begun, the Web
is already teeming with fan sites, speculations, and good old shrines to this favorite
fantasy tale.
Lord of the Rings, which in many peoples' eyes set
the bar for fantasy fiction written this century, was recently honored by Amazon.com
customers, who voted it the best book of the millennium.
Although filming is taking place deep in the heart of New
Zealand, thanks to the Net, buzz is already reaching a fever pitch. Eager followers of Lord
of the Rings are giving Star Wars fans a run for their money when it comes
to closely monitoring their favorite flick.
