Hobbits Hiding Out in Rivendell
Matthew Bass

Recently, USA Today ran an article regarding the Y2K bug and mentioned that many people who are concerned about the implications of the bug have been moving to self-sustaining communities. One, for example, is Rivendell.

Here's the actual excerpt:

In the United States, communities of Y2K survivalists dot the landscape. In Virginia's Blue Ridge mountains, the Internet is drawing people to a self-sustaining community called Rivendell, named after a refuge and learning center in J.R.R. Tolkien's ''Lord of the Rings.''

I did some research, and Rivendell does exist. It's a community of home schoolers (like me!) located south of Roanoke, Virginia. Fascinating!
