Tribal Action Seen at Breaker Bay
Alan Samson

ONLOOKERS at Breaker Bay beach who were bemused by a futuristic-looking pageant being filmed by a big production crew, pictured in The Dominion yesterday, were right to be puzzled.

With actors dressed in long, bluish robes following a leader in white, everyone was soon guessing they were witnessing a scene from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. Everyone was wrong.

Lord of the Rings producer Barrie M Osborne sent an immediate message that the filming had nothing to do with him: filming was continuing near Hamilton.

Producers of the other big show in town, however, Cloud 9's television series The Tribe, were happy to confirm details of the filming -- and that the filming was for the second series of the international- hit series, which is already running in many countries.

"Yep, they were ours," communications executive William Kircher said. "What you were looking at was an evil, enemy tribe called `The Chosen' . . . they're a quasi-religious cult."

According to Mr Kircher, filming for the 52-episode second series is nearing its end -- then series three will come into play.

The first series, an international hit well before it began running in New Zealand, is running on TV4.

Mr Kircher said the second series had not been confirmed for New Zealand screens "but we're expecting it".
