Lord of the Rings stars Elijah Wood, foreground, and Billy Boyd battle it out in sinking bathtubs at Wellington's Dragon Boat Festival yesterday with Boyd, who plays Pippin, eventually winning.

The celebrity bathtub race was watched by amused spectators as Boyd and Wood, plus Dominic Monaghan and Orlando Bloom, who also star in the Peter Jackson-directed film trilogy, paddled their sinking tubs along a 20-metre Queen's Wharf course.

Despite their dedicated paddling, the four failed to keep their tubs afloat. However, Boyd was the first to swim over the finishing line.

The stars agreed to take part to help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House in Newtown, which accommodates families of children in hospital with life-threatening illnesses.

Festival organisers said donations were collected from spectators, but the amount had yet to be added up.

Another bathtub race featured four members of the Capital Shakers netball team.
