Hobbit If you're going to endure long hours in the makeup chair and months away from your home to portray an ax-wielding Dwarf, it helps to have a sense of humor. And John Rhys-Davies, who plays Gimli in Lord of the Rings, has that in abundance. "I wanted to play Denethor and was quite nonplussed when
they told me Peter [Jackson] wanted me to play Gimli," the 56-year-old Welsh actor
says with a laugh. "My agent said, 'If you turn down this role, I don't think I can
represent you anymore.' I realized then that I'd lost the argument!" Despite the hardships ("My skin reacts to the makeup, so I have to go home and hide for two or three days afterward," he says. "It's ruined my social life"), he's happy to be part of a project he calls a career highlight. |
