The world première of part one of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is set to take place in London on 10 December.

Sir Ian McKellan, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Liv Tyler and Elijah Wood star in the film version of JRR Tolkien's epic novels.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three related films directed by New Zealander Peter Jackson, and made at a reported cost of £207m.

Making the announcement of the debut, a spokeswoman for New Line Cinema said further details about the long-awaited films were not available.

A 25-minute clip was shown to cast members, film industry insiders and journalists at a chateau outside Cannes during the annual film festival in May.

US actor Elijah Wood, who plays the film's diminutive hero Frodo Baggins, launched the films international fan club this week.
