Kingsfoil, also known as athelas, is not mentioned for the first time in Return of the King, but rather it is mentioned for the first time in FotR. After Frodo is stabbed by the blade of one of the Nazgul, Aragorn goes in search of athelas (kingsfoil) to ease the pain and slow the evil workings of the Morgul-blade. Aragorn uses it later in the book after the fellowship emerges from Moria and it is mentioned throughout the rest of the trilogy.
