September 5, 2002 The Addiction of the Ring I was reading some of FOTR and I was intently reading the Prancing Pony part where Frodo falls and puts on the ring. It said this. "Frodo leaned back against the wall and took the ring off. How it came to be there he could not tell. He could only suppose he had been handling it in his pocket as he sang and it had somehow slipped on when he had stuck out his hand with a jerk." Then later Strider says: "For that little prank-" "it was sheer accident! interrupted Frodo." "I wonder, said Strider. Accident then. That accident has made your position dangerous. In this scenario the ring is already starting to have an effect on Frodo. He is touching it, handling it more. When it comes on his finger he is annoyed but does not want to explain because unknown to his mind the ring is gaining power over him. Strider can not tell but he feels something queer. This I believe is in conjunction to the attachments of the Nazgul to the ring. It says: "For a moment he wondered if the ring had not played him a trick; perhaps it had tried to reveal itself in response to some wish or command in the room." NOT in the room I would say. I think it was the wills of the Nazgul that caused this. Remember Gandalf's words: "You must remember Frodo, the ring is trying to get back to it's master. It WANTS to be found!" |
