The Incredible Exploding Dark Lord

Razors, remember Sauron lost his original body in the ruin of Numenor, and then had to return to Mordor, 'take up the Ring' whihc he had hidden in Mordor, and refashion a physical shape for himself. Originally he was able to function quite well without it, but after Numemor the ring is the key to him holding physical shape in Middle Earth, hence his tendency to 'go boom' when he loses it [at least that is the theory I feel is put forward in the movie - it is not necessarilly the true nature of the Dark Lord in the literature].
