I'm sure that Glaurung is not a Maia, simply because it hasn't been stated anywhere I've read (Silmarillion, Lost Tales I, II and Lays of Beleriand). In the Silmarillion it states that Morgoth bred the dragons and I assume that Glaurung was the first of the Uruloki (non-winged fire-breathers) same as Angalacon was the first of the Winged Dragons. Unfortunately not too much is stated about the cold-drakes so if anybody knows anything about them please fill me in!
