There has been a long lasting debate about whether it was foolish or wise for Gandalf to entrust Frodo with the task of taking the One ring into Mordor. Well, you all are missing one small detail. It was never Gandalf's plan for Frodo to go alone, he knew that he could not accomplish the destruction of the ring by himself. Gandalf originally was going to go with Frodo, as were the rest of the Fellowship. It was only after Gandalf fell into shadow that things began to fall apart. It was then out of sole necessity that Frodo went off with Sam into Mordor.

Perhaps if Gandalf had not fallen he would have been the beacon of strength that Frodo needed in the last moment to cast the Ring into the fires of mount Doom.
