Re: Wizard Duel
Swynwr

Hey, Jim W, you're right in assuming that wisdom is the definitive quality of a wizard, but have you ever heard Tolkien's words: "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and QUICK TO ANGER!" The truth of these words is reflected in the duel at Orthanc. Even if Tolkien never wrote such a scene, you can't really accuse it of being inconsistent with the nature of wizards. Remember Gandalf's outburst at Bag End? It's in the book as well, in case you've forgotten. Tolkien makes it very clear that wizards are notoriously capable of flying into a rage, but that doesn't necessarily compromise their wisdom. Doesn't Gandalf also say something along the lines of "even the wisest cannot see all ends"? Wizards are, after all, angelic spirits/demi-gods of great power contained within the human forms of old men; obliged to suffer the pains of body and mind. Surely then they possess some of the less agreeable attributes of mortal nature as well as the best? Anyway, there's no point in labouring the case of wisdom when Saruman is concerned, since he's made the most insane of decisions by masquerading as Sauron's ally with the intention of usurping him. But regardless of everything, try to enjoy these films for what they are. They've been crafted with tender loving care. There's no need to be sick over anything. Good grief, man!
