I agree with you about George Lucas' release of the first Star Wars trilogy. It's just when he released the Star Wars SE tilogy, he was going with what was popular at the time. No one really had the capablity to play DVD's, except the rich folk, when the SE was released on VHS. He tried to save 20th Century Fox money by not putting it on DVD at the time. One of the greater reason's yet, is he had not had the time. He has been working on Episode 1 since almost 1995, the script any how. So most of it has been do to time constraints, and popularity at the time he released the films. For it has only been in the last two or three years, at my observation, that DVD has become the more popular thing.

Peter Jackson has had the time to do that sort of thing. For most of the movie has been filmed, and is more or less up to the CG creators now. So all he really has to do is supervise, and make sure everything is going smooth. That, I can imagine, can become dull, and you find something else to do, which in turn, the SE DVD is born.
