Yes, I also believe that was behind Saurons reasoning for attacking Lothlorien, but I do not believe he just wanted the ring to make him more powerfull. He probably thought that if he had one elven ring, he would know where the others were, or through some magic be able to controll the others, or know the thoughts of the bearers or something. Sauron does not just go for one thing, or in this case ring, he wants all or nothing.
