Very good point, Nethanial, about the eagles, for I have thought of it myself. Sauron would be well aware of the eagle's approach, however, and he would have been able to stop through some sort of sorcery, whether it would be erupting Mt. Doom in the eagle's face or sending some sort of flying creature to stop it. After all, the Nazgul's flying steeds were in existence long before the free peoples were aware of them, right?
