Stupid Ringwraiths?

If I'm not mistaken, the Ringwraiths are drawn to the ring. If this is true, then how were they tricked into going into the wrong room at the Prancing Pony? Wouldn't they have known that it wasn't in there? How did they know what room to go in? Did they just go up to Barliman and say "Hey, um, did you see four shirmpy guys and a ring walk by lately?" Some one please clear me up on this.
