Response to 'Stupid Wraiths'

I think the reason the wraiths went to the wrong in is in "The Fellowship" is because that was where Frodo had actually put the ring on. They sensed the rings power in the Prancing Pony. As to asking Butterbur, he was probably too afraid to speak, and would probably have been of no help whatsoever. And in the book Butterbur knew of Frodo's 'predicament' and said that he would help Frodo in any way he could, so he probably wouldn't have said anything anyway.
