Well, Laurie, as I understand it the ringwraiths are ever aware of the ring. However, they only drawn directly to it by its being worn by the bearer. As to how the ringwraiths new what rooms the hobbits were in, in the book Tolkien mentions strange men leaving the common room as soon as they saw Frodo disappear. Ostensibly, these were spies sent to sniff out the bearer so the nazgul wouldn't have to kill every hobbit in Bree, tiring work.
