Re: Who Was First
Olorin
In response to Tomas B., I'm not sure if I can answer your question, but maybe clarify to the point that will put your mind at ease. The oldest living creature in Middle Earth is Treebeard. He was created when Yavanna put forth her thought into the creation of trees and other living, growing things in Middle Earth.
I don't believe Bombadil was considered a creature of Middle Earth. Although his origin is truly unknown, I think most agree he is a spirit of great power. Whether he is a powerful spirit of nature, a Maia, a Vala, or Lluvatar himself, no one will ever really know for sure. But along those lines of thinking, he is an immortal spirit, and not to be counted among the creatures of Middle Earth.
As to who came first, I can only guess. Bombadil is most likely older, but Treebeard was probably in Middle Earth first. After all, Tom loved and had power over certain elements of the nature of Middle Earth. He probably would not have enjoyed living there without the beauty and power of the nature that made up Middle Earth. Anyone else have any thoughts on the issue?
