To Beorn Re: Gimli and Balin
Nathanael147

According to my Appendix A, page 1117 in LOTR Centenary Addition, Fundin had Balin and Dwalin as sons. His brother Groin had Oin and Gloin as sons.So Oin and Gloin were cousins to Balin and Dwalin(1st cousins). So Oin is Gimli's uncle but not related to Balin or Dwalin as cousins. Had Balin and Dwalin begat any children, THOSE would have been 2nd cousins to Gimli (as we recon it nowadays).Fundin would be a great uncle to Gimli since he is the brother of Gimli's granddad Groin.IF Balin and Dwalin had been brothers to Oin and Gloin, THEN Balin would have been Gimli's uncle. They were sons to Gloin and Oin's uncle Fundin, though, so this just makes them 1st cousins to Oin and Gloin. (Sounds more complicated to say it than to see it in a diagram.
