In answer to Rune of Mirkwood's query on the location of Gandalf's research into the History of the Ring. Gandalf found the vital clue in Gondor.A scroll written by Isildur after the war and before he left to go to the North Kingdom was placed in the archives in Gondor. It documented the writing which appeared on the Ring when hot. When Gandalf returned north he tested this by heating the Ring in the fire and the writing appeared, thus proving it to be indeed the One Ring.
