December 4, 2002 Not Quite Careful Enough Alas, after stringently defending the integrity of PJ and his cohorts, one of my fellow Aussie Tolkien nuts has forced me to concede a [sniff] mistake in the Moria sequence. When Gimli is ducking the troll-hammer and Legolas does his funky double-arrow shot into the beast, it topples backwards right through the sunlight falling onto the remains of Balin's tomb. Tolkien [and even PJ in the birthday party sequence] established that when sunlight hits trolls, they turn to stone. Clearly the brute in Moria is even more primitive than the ones arguing on how to cook Bilbo and the dwarves, but surely that would make him more vulnerable to sunlight, not less. |
