December 17, 2002 Re: Scouring of the Shire Do not even begin to suggest that the scouring of the shire does not fit in a movie. Yes it is not as big of a skirmish as the Fields of pelennor and there is no sauron or ring. The scouring of the shire is showing what happened in that 22 chapters in which it is barely mentioned and how the hobbits have changed after their quest. Imagine the movie without it: the shire is unharmed by all of Saurons and Sarumans schemes?, why dont we jsut end it with they all lived happily ever after, what would saruman do after he was banished? just go into the wilderness ? With out it there is no closure, I thought the best part of the books was the scouring of the shire it fits in perfectly in a movie format. Thats like saying the battle on hoth doesnt belong in star wars. |
