April 18, 2002 The Eagles Well, that is one interesting question. Why didn't Gandalf and Frodo just jump on an eagle and fly to Mt. Doom? Well, I have a few answers, but they may not do. One is that the mission had to be of stealth. Flying an eagle to Mordor with the ring would get Sauron's attention real quick. A key to the success of the ringbearer was that Sauron NEVER expected him in Mordor, so Frodo had to sneak in. Another key point is that while Frodo and Sam were toiling in Mordor Gandalf was doing his best to keep Sauron and his armies occupied. This way, Sauron was almost salivating about destroying Gondor, Rohan, and the many high and mighty people (Gandalf, Aragorn, Eomer, Theoden, Imrahil, etc...) at the last battle. His plans never were completed because the ring was "cast" into Mt. Doom. A perfect plan by Gandalf, and every one played their parts to perfection. If Frodo was on an eagle Sauron would know, he would feel the presence of the ring because he would be focusing on the ring. He would have sent his Nazgul and Frodo would have most likely perished. That is what my answer is, right or wrong, I hope that it helps!! |
