Destruction of the Ring

Okay, my friend says she remembers reading in some Tolkien book that the One Ring isn't necessarially destroyed by throwing into the Cracks of Doom. She says that she read that it's only thrown in their so no one could ever get it again, not even Sauron. But I don't ever remember seeing that, and if that is true, then the movies have been amking some HUGE mistakes (other than the one we already know about). I'm just trying to prove her wrong, so, if anyone can remember reading that strange info above, reply,please.
