As another person who has only read the Hobbit and LOTR, I can see where you are coming from, Quirk. However, in regards to Saruman and Gandalf drawing their power from the same source. I always thought it would lend it's self better to the fallen angel, a.k.a. Satan.

My understanding was that Saruman wasn't always evil but was twisted to evil, at least in part by his use of the palantir, and when his betrayal was revealled Gandalf became the head of his order which is why Saruman cowers before Gandalf when they meet again. That was how I understood it. Any thoughts?
