January 20, 2003 Re: Jackson's Folly I am glad to hear that there is someone out there that isn't all googley eyed over TTT. It seems to me that Jackson has gone from being scrutinized by fans to someone who can do no wrong. I think that that is a dangerous thing. Sure, they are his movies and he can do with them as he wishes, but I think that these books touch almost everyone that reads them in a way that most books do not. In light of that, I was glad that there were fans that were making their views known, and from what I remember reading, Jackson himself was using the internet to try and get in touch with the "Tolkien collective". I think this may have been an attempt to bring to people who have not read the book the shared feeling of wonderment that we fans have. I fear Jackson is going down a formulaic path meant to appease his financial backers rather than trying to just tell a long story and keep people interested in it, as Tolkien did, quite successfully I might add.
