Trolls?

I have only seen The Two Towers once so far (on opening day)so there is a chance I may be mistaken. In the scene where Sam, Frodo, and Gollum are approaching the Black Gates, it looks as though there are trolls on either side of the gate pulling the gate open. I'm sure I must be mistaken about this because the scene in question takes place during the daytime and trolls turn to stone in sunlight. Perhaps I am wrong about this. Maybe someone else who has seen the movie more recently could shed some light on this subject.
