Book vs Film
Jane
I managed to read Two Towers just in time for the film’s release. I had seen Fellowship of The Ring but had not read the book so this time around I was keen to read the book first to see how part two of the trilogy compared to the book.
As a film in it’s own right Two Towers could not be faulted - it is a visionary master-piece. The scenery was breath-taking, the special effects were amazing and the musical score was exactly right. The comparison between book and film however will no doubt be discussed for some time.
I am sure that Two Towers appealed to cinema-goers who have not read the book because they had nothing to compare it to and so could enjoy the film for what is was – sheer entertainment! My husband was one of those people and he rated the film very highly. Although noting discrepancies myself, I have to say that I found the film engrossing and these minor changes did not spoil my enjoyment of the film. In fact, I am eagerly awaiting Return of The King (which I have just completed reading) despite the fact that this too will no doubt have portions missing completely and will contain added content. My only gripe with two Towers was that it did not end with Frodo and Sam’s encounter with Shelob but I suppose in PJ’s wisdom he has left that for Return of The King.
People shouldn’t be so pedantic because at the end of the day PJ is a movie-maker, not a writer, and he has to condense twenty or so chapters into a three hour film! Just enjoy the film for its entertainment value and at least if you’ve read the book then you know exactly what happens so what does it matter !!
