Orcs and Uruk-hai

The wierdest thing happened to me the other day. I was talking with my friends about the Lord of the Rings, and the question came up: "What are orcs?" Naturally, I explained that they were tortured, mutilated elves. Then they started questions about the Uruk-hai, and I found myself at a loss! I could not for the life of me explain how they cross orcs and men, and why they come out of the ground. I have done research, and I still cannot find a single thing anywhere, internet or otherwise, that explains this. Help!!!
