March 3, 2003 The Enemy of Good The enemy of good is "a little better". I remember taking apart a lawn mower as a boy thinking that I could make it run better. That old mower and hard work was my only source of income. My misguided desire to make an immenintly useful machine "a little better" was unsuccessful. It was never the same. The mower still ran and I collected the usual fee for performing the summer time ritual for the less inclined neighbors but it took longer and was harder to start. This childish "tinkering" seriously compromised the "performance" for me being all too familiar with the "original". "Little Peter" has done alot of useless "tinkering" in "The Two Towers". Making Treebeard an ignorant rambling oaf and changing Faramir into a mesmerized boot licking lackey for the steward of Gondor has seriously compromised the "performance". None of the changes from the "original" have done anything at all to "improve" The Two Towers. In Peters defense there is a payday inspite of his misguided story mechanics but in all honesty he owes that to the integrity and strength of the original design |
