Poor Faramir, but Sara (of 03-02-03 fame), I think I know the reason why. PJ needs Sauron's eye to turn to Gondor. What better reason than a "sighting" of the ring at Osgiliath, which, when coupled with Sauron's understanding of man's weakness, would draw his eye to Minas Tirith. In my view Faramir differs from his portrayal in the book, but he is still strong, as in the end he rejects the ring.
