March 12, 2003 Reply to the Happyscotsman on Arwen Of course none of us (except for PJ and the rest of the initiated) really know what the scene of Arwen leaving Rivendell means in the plot further on, but a thing that struck me was that the expression on Elronds face isnt really the expression of a relieved parent, but more of one that is weighed heavily with the fate laid before him. Elronds almost aggressive (in a non-violent way)coaxing towards Arwen and her staying behind in the world of men, could be interpreted as someone who is ultimately fighting a losing battle and gradually more aware of that fact.
