Pippin: Dead or Alive
Manofwesternesse

In response to Brett c. On this new (to me anyway) debate on whether Pippin was actually killed in the battle before the Black Gate, and brought back, or whether he was simply stunned/unconsious/injured or whatever and healed.
I never considered Pippin to have been killed, even with Gimli's comment "...I made sure you were dead.." ,I've always taken this to mean that Gimli thought Pippin MIGHT be dead when he saw him (or just his foot sticking out, un-moving, from underneath a Troll). But, imho, he was not dead, and was healed/revived by the powers of Aragorn & Gandalf.

Indeed I always wondered more at the realistic outcome of Gandalf's meeting with the Balrog. Was he dead, or transformed in some wy short of death? Yes, the "new" Gandalf the White was born, but did the "old" Gandalf the Grey "die". (He did later claim that he was now both if I remember aright?)
