April 20, 2003 Something Controversial (Sort of a Spoiler) Before I start: DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE ROTK!! Second: don't hate me for what I'm about to say. I love the books and think they're perfect as they are: this is just a silly little idea that I like. So: As you may or may not know, I've never been thrilled with any changes made by the movie to the original story. I'm okay with them, and I understand why they were necessary, but I don't exactly jump around with joy when I see them done. I know that changes are going to be made to the ROTK and expect them, but there's one change that I wouldn't mind seeing (don't flip out: It's not going to happen. I made this up: I'm just saying I wouldn't mind seeing it happen). As I'm assuming you know, at the end of the ROTK (book, naturally) Gollum falls into the Cracks of Doom after biting the Ring from Frodo's hand. Now, I know this had to happen because it destroys the ring, ends Gollum's suffering, and brings upon him the punishment for breaking his oath to Frodo; but I'd like to see something slightly different happen (as in, falling by accident isn't enough). Don't get me wrong here, I feel sorry for Gollum and everything, but he's done a lot of bad things, particularly (I feel) to Sam (who is my favorite character). So, when Gollum bites Frodo's finger and starts his little victory dance, I think he should START to fall (with one of those big, long, dramatic teeterings that Hollywood loves so much), and then Sam, who has recovered himself from the nasty blow to the head he got from Gollum a few minutes before, should run up to help Frodo and PUSH Gollum off! Sam deserves a little revenge, and he'd only be helping along the inevitable! Don't call me morbid; I just really think that Gollum needs to get his from the hand of Sam. It's a small alteration that WON'T be happening in the movie (so don't worry), but that I like. So? What do you guys think? Am I being unfaithful to the story in thinking that this change would almost be for the better, or am I off my rocker? |
