Grounded Orcs

This may sound really nitpicky, (and I am very greatful for the responses to the questions I asked on orcs) but WHY IS SARUMAN GETTING THEM OUT OF THE GROUND? I mean, do they just sprout up out of nowhere, and they stick 'em in the ground for the heck of it? Are they torturing them? WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THIS?!?!?!?!

P.S. As you can see, I'm a little desperate. : )
