Orcs Out of the Ground?

The "birth" of the Uruk-hai (who incidentally are NOT half-orcs, i.e half orc half human, as has been discussed on this forum earlier) irritated me especially the first time I saw it in FotR. I think the background for it is to show something like the fantasy-classic "breeding-pits" whatever they are. Another reason why they chose to portray it in this way might be that these beings thereby become more of Sarumans creation than ehh... by more conventional methods of reproducing.

But as it stands in the movies it is left pretty much unexplained - maybe there will be some more on it on the extended ed. of TTT.
