April 26, 2003 Just An Idea (a Response and a Question) Like I said, I wasn't trying to be unfaithful to the stories when I submitted my idea for the Mount Doom scene, but was just thinking that that would be a more dramatic end. Although it isn't Sam's nature to be vengeful, and although he DID pity Gollum, he did threaten him more than once in the book, and in some places it almost seems as though only Frodo's wishes could keep him from killing him outright. Also, I don't look at it as revenge so much as punishment. Gollum's gone for a long time with no real punishment, just a bunch of threats. And, if I were allowed to pick the person to deliver him justice, it would be Sam. I would never consider having Frodo do such a thing. But Sam did warn him, remember, that if he (Gollum) ever came back he would hurt him. Soon after Gollum returned and hit Sam over the head with a rock. By that time I had had enough of him, and I felt Sam deserved to carry out his threat. But he didn't: and I'm fine with that. Sorry if I offended or displeased anyone. Also, I still haven't had any answers to my Earendil question. How do you pronounce his name?? I've been putting the stress on the 'a' (eArendil). But I've heard others say it with the stress on the second 'e' (earEdnil). HELP!! |
