HP Duels LotR

Theres no two ways about it, Harry Potter is a well written book by a good author, (I've only read the first one) but compared to the depth and writting structure of LOTR, Potter's nothing but a book to read on the side. I must always come back to how similar the two are. I know almost everyone in the world will know that LOTR was written almost half-century before HP, but because people have seen the HP movies already they can't help but think when there watching Shelob in The Return of the King 'huh, wasn't that giant spider thing in Harry Potter?' instead of the other way round. I know it sounds stupid to the people who have read the books, but I bet you those that haven't will tend to think this.
Anyways, is it just me or would other people really like to see Peter Jackson take on 'The Hobbit'. Have there been any confirmed reports on this project?
