My Thoughts on the Current Debate
Janelle
I must agree with Sarah, Olwarz and all you others who have writen simalar essays. I didn't actually read Quirk's myself, but I think I know what's going on.
Tolkien never ment to put any analogy into his books, yet we still manage to get symbolism out of it. I got kinda confused with this for a while, but I realised that things we believe and things in our lives sometimes assits in our interpitation of things. And who we are is shown by how we interpet and how we present things.
For example, I'm a Christian myself and also a writer. My stories, wether I mean to or not will reflect my beliefs. If I write a fanasy story, others who might read it may find simalarities to the Bible and Christainity because that's a part of my life. Like what we're doing to Tolkien's works.
I don't nesicarrily like finding the simalarities in The Lord of the Rings though. It was ment as an escape story and that's what I think it should be kept as.
