HP Helped LotR
KJ
First, let me begin by saying that I have read all of the Potter books and have seen both movies. I have also read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books and have seen both movies. I consider myself a fan of both. Like most of you, though, I also feel that LOTR is undeniably superior in every way, shape, and form.
However, I disagree with opinions that HP stole any thunder from the LOTR movies. On the contrary, I feel that the phenomena of Harry Potter has helped open the door for mainstream acceptance of fantasy, including LOTR. Without all of the soccer moms and religious zealots creating a frenzy and enhancing the popularity of HP and fantasy in general, the LOTR movies may have not been the cultural event they have become. Would they have grossed a lot of money? Yes, but probably not as much. Would they still be critical favorites? Yes. Would they be referred to by as many TV shows, stand-up comedians, preachers, advertisements, water cooler conversations, etc. as they are now? I don't think so.
Our society and the entertainment we experience are driven by money and the potential to make more money. The fact that HP sold a googol of books and had two very successful movies simply acted as a precursor and helper to the resurgence of the LOTR books and the tremendous success of the movies. There is no need to make the two series compete. We should just be thankful that everything has turned out as well as it has for fans of both series.
