Where is Gil-galad?

Am I missing something here? A poll on this site to determine which character in the films looks best in armour resulted in a large percentage of the vote going to Gil-Galad. I cannot personally remember seeing anyone identified as Gil-Galad fighting in the prologue at the start of Fellowship. Gil-Galad does appear with Cirdan and Galadriel immediately before this when we are told of the three elven rings but we don't even know which is which between Gil-Galad and Cirdan so how have so many people managed to vote for him? Along the lines of the same topic, while if I think about it we probably do get a brief glimpse of Gil-Galad at the battle, where is Cirdan? He was supposed to be with Elrond and Gil-Galad when Gil-Galad was killed by Sauron and to to have helped Elrond try to persuade Isildur to destroy the Ring but there is no sign of him. It is unlikely that he's been written out altogether as he should have a role to play at the Grey Havens in Return of the King so why not familiarise the audience with the character in Fellowship?
