Eagles...
Annatar
Some people have said that the eagles only take action when ordered by Eru or Manwe, but this fails to take into account at least two points:
1. in the Silmarillion, the eagles respond to the requests/orders of Turgon of Gondolin.
2. in LOTR Gwaihir, is not just flying around (sorry Everett)he is in fact delivering messages to Orthanc.(Gandalf told Radagast to direct all messages to Isengard, which he did)
This shows the eagles took an active part in the defense of the "west". They were not just tools of Eru or the Valar (are not deities major or minor, just guardians. although men in later days called them Gods... influence from Morgoth and Sauron),but could respond to calls for aid from their allies.
As for flying into Mordor with the ring. The thought had occured to me, and all i could figure is that such a desperate gamble would have met a quick and bloody end at the claws of the flying nazgul. failing that the legions of orcs in mordor would have made life difficult for any attempting to gain entry to mt doom.
Such an attempt would have been seen coming a mile off by sauron >> Palantir. Failing nazgul, orcs trolls etc it may not be inconcievable that Sauron himself may have exited barad dur to meet the foolish fellowship who dared to travel by air. course as denethor, said he comes not forth but uses others to do his work.
It has just occured to me that the Fellowship are thieves and vandals, who on receipt of stolen goods(the ring) they try to destroy it! not fair! Poor Sauron, he was only trying to unite all peoples and raise up the underclass (orcs etc). A new all embracing Brother/Sisterhood.
Ahh well maybe ill have betterluck next time. oops my alias has slipped.
