Saruman and Council
Diana

Fluidshaggy and John, you could both be right. Saruman might not have been evil at first, then his greed for power grew. I've come across similar stories where people with greed, hatred, or something evil in their mind are more easily hypnotized or corrupted. Therefore, it could be that the greed made Saruman vulnerable to the corruption.

Brett, I'm wondering too. How could Gimli not be aware of the dangers of Moria, especially when Gloin was mentioning about them at the Council of Elrond? He could have been aware, and was just denying it. Then Gandalf was probably aware that the Fellowship might have to go through the Mines, and didn't want to scare them.

You are probably right about the other members of the Council. As I've mentioned, the movie doesn't do a good job with introductions. Most of those names you mentioned came from the book, and I think without reading the book first, the movie could leave viewers dazed and confused. That's what happened to me.
