The Fate of the Elves

Tolkien explained that the Elves are immortal only in the sense that they are bound with Arda and will remain there until its' end. Therefore if they are slain or die from grief (yes, it does happen), Their spirits go to the halls of mandos to await the end. Some are even reborn and allowed to join with their kin once more.

Men, however, are not bound to the earth and when they die it is not known to wheree their souls depart.
