Re: Sibling Trouble
Jimeous

LoL G :)

How do you explain to your younger brother the intrinsic nature of the book without being dismissed as a "cop out" right? hehehehehe

While all Rings of Power enhance the abilities of its bearer, Gandalf is not likely to take the life of someone he once called friend. Especially considering the thousands of years they were friends :p

Saruman caught him off guard, Gandalf had his suspicions of course, but didn't think Saruman was already steeped in as much evil.

Gandalf is a "good man" and thereby he chose to limit the use of his ability. Both Saruman and Gandalf were sent "to encourage and bring out the native powers of the Enemies of Sauron" [Letter 144]. Of course this is where Saruman disobeyed and insuch desired to be the author of the downfall of Sauron. It wasn't either of thier jobs to act as such. [Not at that time at least].

So if Gandalf defeated Saruman, when he was Gandalf the Grey, he would have disobeyed the orders which had him there. As a good man he could not, it isn't until he is sent back that he is given more authority and a different objective. Gandalf though, still chose to aide the Enemies of Sauron, encouraging them to resist.

"I am Gandalf, Gandalf the White, but Black is mightier still"

This is what is meant when Tolkien says that Black is mightier still. The wicked live by no restrictions and will use any means to victory, the good live by rules which set boundaries. Of course Saruman wasn't wholly evil which again prevents Gandalf from expressing his fullest power.

Another point is that Saruman has his own Ring, we're not sure what it is, or its own power. If Saruman could learn the secrets of creating Orcs [especially Uruk-hai] then the Ring must also be one of great strength.

But the reality is, Gandalf the Grey, even with Narya [which complimented Gandalf's calling in that it raised the morale and inner strength], was no match for Saruman the White, and certainly was more restricted than Saruman of Many Colours.

But when he returns, he has changed, giving him a new objective and ability to unviel his power.
